The Department of Education is currently undertaking the development of a Newfoundland and Labrador Early Learning Action Plan, which will also include a legislative review of the Child Care Act and regulations.

As the purpose of the engagement is multilayered, the Department is seeking input from individuals and organizations involved in the child care sector on topics related to the creation of a Newfoundland and Labrador Early Learning Action Plan including the review of child care legislation (Act and regulations) and its early learning programs.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is looking to seize this opportunity to realize economic and social benefits for the people of our province, position Newfoundland and Labrador for opportunities in developing critical mineral supply chains, and ensure that our Province’s mineral resources are developed responsibly and sustainably.  The Department of Industry, Energy and Technology is seeking the public’s input in order to inform a Critical Minerals Strategy for the province.

As part of Year of the Arts 2024, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has announced that a new mid-sized theatre will be established in St. John’s. This consultation is the next step in the project development process.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is seeking feedback directly from the arts community and the general public to inform the scope of the new theatre initiative. The input received as a result of this consultation process will inform decision-making processes, such as potential locations for the theatre, optimal capacity and artistic functionality.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Crown lands are administered under the Lands Act and allocated as a public trust. The Provincial Government manages this valuable resource in a responsible manner for the continuous social and economic benefit of the province’s residents for present and future generations.

The Provincial Government is considering updating Lands Act to clarify adverse possession against the Crown and protect the land interests of the people of the province. To assist in this process, the province engaged the public and key stakeholders for input.

Updated: What We Heard

The Department of Industry, Energy, and Technology (IET) is seeking input from representatives from areas of interest identified for potential wind development in the recent Call for Land Nominations. This input will be used to inform decisions about lands that may be made available for a competitive bid process for onshore wind development projects, and to help ensure the development of the province’s wind resources is undertaken in a responsible, timely, sustainable and competitive manner, with due consideration to the interests of local stakeholders and communities.

On October 17, 2019, the Provincial Government released The Adult Literacy Action Plan, a five-year action plan for adult literacy in Newfoundland and Labrador. As stakeholders in this plan, the Provincial Government is looking to employers to provide important perspectives on literacy, particularly as it relates to the workplace.

A statutory review of the Independent Appointments Commission Act is being conducted as per Section 16 of the Act. An Independent Appointments Commission has been established. This is a seven person, non-partisan commission appointed through a resolution of the House of Assembly. The Commission provides merit-based recommendations to approximately 30 Tier One entities. The review is open to the public and will be comprehensive and identify improvements to enhance the overall efficiency, effectiveness and outcomes of the legislation, and the subsequent processes that support its administration.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador passed the Pay Equity and Pay Transparency Act (the Act) in October 2022. The Act outlines pay equity provisions for the public sector, and pay transparency provisions for the public and private sectors.

The Office of Women and Gender Equality, the Department of Environment and Climate Change, and the Treasury Board Secretariat are seeking input to help inform the drafting of regulations regarding the Act.

The Department of Industry, Energy, and Technology (IET) sought input from stakeholders on ways to improve and modernize the Mineral Act and the Mining Act to provide a clear pathway for regulatory approval and to ensure exploration for, and development of, the province’s mineral resources is responsible, timely, sustainable, competitive and supportive of private-sector investments and job growth.

Updated: What We Heard

The Provincial Government is seeking your input for highway projects for its Multi-Year Provincial Roads Plan.

The plan considers road projects based on safety; traffic volumes; socio-economic impacts; factors such as commercial, industry, and tourism impacts, populations serviced; the impacts of climate change; and evidence and input from the general public and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s engineers.
